Riverside greenway

WORKING Group

creating connections / restoring a legacy

The Riverside Greenway Working Group is a coalition of stakeholders collaborating with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT) and the City of Newton Massachusetts to restore historic recreational legacy and create connections between recreational trails along the Charles River in Newton Lower Falls, Auburndale, Weston and Wellesley.

To accomplish this we are systematically documenting the existing conditions, defining needed improvements and developing the relationships with state, municipal, and private agencies to improve our understanding of the steps are needed to achieve our goal of a r creating a greenway - a continuous network of multi-use and foot trails - along the banks of the Charles River in Newton, Wellesley and Weston.

We have identified and named a number of components, received and implemented grants to study these, develop conceptual and design plans so that that can be restored or built:

  • The Commonwealth Ave Carriage Road
  • The Norumbega Loop Trail
  • The Auburndale Street Grid
  • The Charles St Tunnel
  • The Pigeon Hill Trail
  • The Riverside Depot Tunnel
  • The Riverside Rd "Stringer" (Lasell Boathouse) Bridge
  • Access to the Riverside MBTA Station
  • The Pony Truss Trail
  • The Two Bridges Trail
  • The Newton Lower Falls Street Grid
  • Trails in Leo J. Martin Golf Course

The schematic below shows these components of the Greenway we envision. There is a webpage describing each of these in greater detail.

Please view a slide show of the Greenway.
